I blustered in to Cheeva Spa on the afternoon of Tuesday 17th May 2011, an afternoon of pouring tropical rain in Chiang Mai that reminded me again of how perfect a day spa can be when soggy elephants, tigers and trekking don’t appeal.

Cheeva Spa is centrally located just a few minutes walk from the moat and Central department store; it was easy to park, easy to find and the calm lobby area soothed my rain-storm frazzle instantly. Cheeva Spa is a recipient of the Thai Lanna Spa Award and, despite its modest street facade, the genuine Lanna interior décor is both subtle and impressive. I was able to peruse the spa menu over a chilled herbal drink, and was torn between the body wraps, various massages, the herbal steam room, a body scrub and a milk bath. It helped to be able to ask questions in English and, after consultation, settled on a body scrub and the Cheeva Signature massage a total of 2,900 baht (about USD $98) for well over 2 hours of pampering.

I was taken to a lounge chair in a secluded part of the foyer to finish my drink while my feet were scrubbed and washed in traditional herbal floral water. These floral waters (locally called “lustral water”) are an important part of Thai tradition and Buddhist festivals they are a demonstration of respect. My therapist, Kuk, managed my foot injury (a recently broken big toe) very professionally and checked right up front about pain levels, discomfort and any health issues. She then took me from the main building through a pretty tropical garden to a separate cabin that could also be used for couples treatments and boasted a magnificent stone tub.

The Body Scrub was pleasantly tingly and slightly warm-the therapists touch was firm enough to feel it was helping my skin to exfoliate but not to the point of “sand-paper” or irritating. Body Scrubs are challenging to remove elegantly, so I was pleasantly surprised to be helped off the table and assisted into the large stone tub behind a folding screen to shower it off with a strong and effective hand-held shower. The contrast of a hot shower after the tingly cool scrub made me feel pleasantly drowsy as I settled back onto the table for the massage.

The Cheeva Signature Massage is a graceful, almost dance-like fusion massage incorporating oil massage, Thai, Balinese, Lomi, Swedish and Hawaiian styles-thats what I remember. The masseuse was not only Thai government certified but very skilled-no annoying chatter but her attentiveness to everything from dimming lighting, checking the room temperature, ensuring I had access to tissues and to my privacy whilst undressing and turning on the table were impressive. Just when I thought I was so relaxed that I might never walk again, the therapist completed the massage with some energizing Thai elements that gave me a pleasant sense of wakefulness and energy. The touch of her doing my unruly and thoroughly mussed hair into a Thai-girl elegant chignon, complete with a frangipani blossom, was lovely.

I liked the quietly understated professionalism of Cheeva Spa and would most certainly recommend it to anyone; its a class act. In fact, as I was preparing to leave and sipping a hot cup of ginger tea, a new European customer came in and sat near me in the lobby. While the staff went to get her some slippers, she discreetly asked me if it was any good and what treatments Id had. I happily (and without a moments hesitation) raved about my treatment and suggested she have it too. I was still impressed when I got home, so I voluntarily popped on to Trip Advisor to give Cheeva Spa an extra endorsement. My little daughter squealed with delight when I collected her later: Mama, your hair makes you look just like a beautiful Thai girl!

The Amora Spa,  inside the Amora Hotel is centrally located in Chiang Mai, a short walk from Thapae Gate.  The hotel which is rated 4/5, was established in 2002 and the spa in 2008.   Room rates at the hotel begin around $35 USD per night.

The spa is nicely furnished in a contemporary Thai style.  The facility itself appears quite new and was thoroughly  clean throughout.  The spa includes multiple massage and treatment rooms, sauna, steam, and jacuzzis.  The menu is fairly extensive.  Of course Thai massage and Thai herbal are available as is Swedish, sports, aroma oil, foot reflexology, and an Ayurvedic massage.  They also offer a variety of packages which combine massage, scrubs, baths, steams, and more.

I received the Amora Recovery package which includes a thirty minute body scrub using a natural mineral combination, a thirty minute jacuzzi, followed by a one hour massage.

The scrub was fairly generic as scrubs go.  The scrub material was mildly to moderately abrasive.  The therapist applied it with good skill and it was a pleasantly relaxing thirty minutes.  The scrub is followed with a shower and into the jacuzzi for 30 minutes.  One of the things I liked about this treatment was the view from the tub.  There are shutters in reach from the tub that can be opened to reveal a rather nice view of Doi Suthep mountain.

This package gives you the option of choosing from a few different massages.  I chose the Lanna Exotic massage.  This massage is an oil massage that also includes some traditional Thai techniques such as Tok-Sen.  Tok-Sen is performed by using two blocks of wood.  One block is placed in contact with the skin, over a meridian line.  That block is then struck with the other block.  This is repeated over the course of the line.  The action has a direct physical affect over the points of contact but also has a vibratory affect from the sound and the transmission of the vibration through the body.  The oil portion of the massage was done with mild to moderate pressure and was quite relaxing.

Overall the Amora Spa is clean, well equipped, with professional and pleasant staff.  The treatment I received was good and I would be comfortable recommending this spa.  The spa also offers memberships for locals and frequent visitors.

I visited the Oasis Spa on July 19, 2010. The staff was not aware that a review was being done. The Oasis day spas came on the scene in 2003, beginning here in Chiang Mai. They now have spas in Phuket, Pattaya, Bangkok, and two locations in Chiang Mai. Their prices are moderate and service is consistent at their various locations.

I went to the Oasis location near Wat Phra Sing though both locations are equally appealing. Oasis is currently running a promotion, you receive an additional one hour mangosteen body scrub with any two hour signature massage and so that was my plan.

The facility is immaculate, with a traditional Lanna style. The reception area is roomy and welcoming with more than adequate staffing. All of the staff seems very well trained and professional. The Oasis menu includes traditional Thai massages, Ayurveda, warm stone massage, oil massages, and a variety of scrubs, wraps, and other treatments. I chose the one hour Mangosteen scrub followed by a two hour Hot Oil Massage.

Oasis Spa Chiang Mai

A hostess escorted me into a very pleasant garden where I met my therapist Koy. Koy said that she had been working with Oasis for the past three years. Koy took me to the separate building with a fairly large treatment room and adjacent shower and toilet area. The treatment room was well done with traditional Lanna style furniture and decor. The teak hardwood floors added to the very positive energy of the space. The large shower and changing area has a ceiling that is partially open to the outside. I really like the feeling of being outside when I’m inside, it seems to resonate with that primitive part of our self that one time did bath and do everything in nature.

Koy did the mangosteen scrub and massage very close to perfection. The mangosteen concoction was warm and it was applied with slow, slightly firm, relaxing strokes. The hostess had described the Hot Oil Massage as relaxing and soothing, and indeed it was. In a past review, I discussed the importance of presence on the part of a massage therapist. Koy had it in abundance. The warm oil was applied with long Swedish style strokes with light to medium depth. It was a deeply relaxing treatment from beginning to end. Sometimes people think that a massage needs to be deep to have therapeutic value. I would disagree, a massage that creates deep relaxation can be very healing. The fact is that all healing is self-healing, but we need to have the correct elements to allow it. Deep relaxation is one of the required elements. This treatment provided that.

The Oasis fee for the two hour massage including the 10% service charge and 7% tax was 3178 THB or just under $100 USD. The one hour Mangosteen scrub was free with the massage.

I was very pleased with the three hour treatment and most certainly do recommend the Oasis Spas.
